We went to the Valhalla macadamia nut farm near San Miguel Duenas. We took a tour of the farm and got to see how Macadamia nuts grow on trees. There was an old-fashioned hand crank carousel swing on the farm. We saw two simple machines; one that removes the husks from the nuts and another that sorts them according to size. Visitors also got to sample various macadamia nut products. Macadamia nuts are ideal for farming because they do not require much water and they resist disease. You do not have to pick the nuts from the trees; they fall by themselves when they are ripe. A seedling will produce macadamia nuts after 4 years of growth. A Macadamia tree can produce nuts for up to 200 years.
