Sand in Stages...by Spot(dot)It

I went to the beach at Playa Chiquita (that means 'Tiny Little Beach' in Spanish).  I noticed that there was different sand in places...
...and I was curious.

This is coral that has died due to changes in its environment.
I wondered wondered what happened next in the cycle.

I can see where living coral grew...many different kinds.
I wish it was still alive.

Another picture of the bleached coral structures
that help break waves farther from shore.

I found these pieces from the coral on the ocean floor while snorkeling.

I see so many different colours of broken coral in this handful of sand...
...orange, purple, yellow, green, white and red.

I see small shells in this course sand.

The broken coral pieces become smaller as they continually are tossed by the ocean waves higher up on the beach.

Finally, the sand is small grains...
but I could still see the colours that use to be alive on the coral reef.

So much sand.

Enjoying the ocean with my Brother
after exploring the stages of a once living coral reef as it turns to sand.

  1. These are great pictures to show the process of sand being formed!
