Difference Between a Crater and a Caldera ..by Exotic Chicken

How is a crater formed?
A crater is formed when when a volcano erupts.  It looks like a bowl.

How is a caldera formed?
A caldera is formed when a volcano collapses into itself.  It is circular and has vertical walls.

Can you give examples of a crater?
On Cerro Negro the crater looked like a bowl.

Can you give examples of a caldera?
On Volcan Masaya you could see lava at the bottom of a caldera.

Is there one near our home in Sioux Lookout?
Sturgeon Lake near Silver Dollar is a caldera lake.

What is confusing about the two?
Laguna Apoyo was formed as a caldera. Over time it was filled with water and became known as a crater lake.
Craters can be formed by asteroids too, but that is completely different.
